Does the length of the coaxial cable make a difference in sound quality for a home theater system?

Question by Kayo: Does the length of the coaxial cable make a difference in sound quality for a home theater system?
We just purchased the Onkyo HT-SP904 home theater system at Circuit City and discovered that we need coaxial cables because the receiver requires a separate audio connection. We have access to 12′ length digital coaxial cables (from a friend who will give them to us) but really only need 4′ length ones. My question is: will this make enough of a difference in sound quality to warrant purchasing new 4′ coaxial cables?

How do I hook up my home theater system so I can listen to my digital cable?

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , on August 22, 2010 by unlimitedtechsupport

Question by Matt: How do I hook up my home theater system so I can listen to my digital cable?
I just got a Sony Bravia ( KDL46V25L1), a Sony Home Theater System (which hooks through DVD player), and an HD cable box. I’m trying to hook up the home theater system so I can listen to the cable, but so far I can only listen to the DVD player in surround sound. The DVD player hooks up to “Video 5”, while the HDMI input is “Video 6” on the TV.

The question is how can I hook up the HT system to play the audio from the cable?

How do I make the sound of my cable go through the home theater system speakers?

Question by mcaf: How do I make the sound of my cable go through the home theater system speakers?
I just bought a new LG homje theater system. It is hooked up to my tv with an HDMI cable. I also have an xbox that is hooked up to my tv with a cable. How do I make the sound of my xbox and my cable come through my home theater speakers??

Answer by Texperson
If your home theater has true HDMI you can attach your cable box and xbox into the receiver’s HDMI inputs, then run one HDMI into your tv out of the receiver’s HDMI output. Then you just change inputs on the receiver for the items.

If it doesn’t have the HDMI hookups, then just run your HDMI for both things into the tv. Then run optical cables straight from the cable box into the receiver, bypass the tv, and do the same with the xbox. Turn off the tv’s sound. Choose the appropriate HDMI input on the tv and the optical input on the receiver as needed for each item.

Question by tgo2007: How do I connect my dvd/vcr player, dvr cable box,dvd recorder, and home theater system to my HD TV?
I have a RCA HD TV, SV 2000 digital dvd/vcr player,Apex digital home theater system, directv cable box, and a Liteon dvd recorder. I have not been able to connect them since I got them a year ago.I was told I had to buy a dvd recorder in order to record movies I watched on cable because the SV 2000 was just for playing. Can you tell me,(the absolutely not technically inclined person) in simple terms how to connect these componants? Thanks, tgoree75785

There are too many ways to hook up your equipment, and too much information left out in your question. Explaining them all would make it too confusing.

First of all, how many inputs are there on the back of your TV, and what kind of inputs are they? (HDMI, Components, Composites). Do you have a high def DVR, and does it have an HDMI or component output? Does your DVR have more than one output? If so, what kind of outputs does it use? (Components, Composites?)

Your best bet is to ask your neighbor’s geeky kid to install it for you.

Yes, they are usually called “A-B boxes” or “composite video switchers” and you can find them everywhere from Radio Shack to Circuit City, typically for -40 depending on complexity.

I just upgraded my speakers from the z-640 to the z-680 .

So i wanna know will i get full 5.1 digital surround when i connect the z-680 to the ps3 through a optical cable ?

Yes. You are not supposed to get true digital 5.1 through some adapter or even RCA for that matter (these connections only simulate surround sound, at best). Optical and HDMI are the only connections that will give you true, legitimate digital 5.1 surround sound.

How do you get 5.1 surround sound through cable?

Question by cassnate: How do you get 5.1 surround sound through cable?
I have a 5.1 system and cable that supports HD. There is a converter box, but it only supports the basic HD channels (which are the network channels). Is there a way to get true 5.1 digital surround sound, as opposed to Dolby Pro Logic?

Best answer:

Answer by lord_greatmane
Yes there is, IF your cable box supports digital sound. Many cable companies charge extra for the better box that supports these formats. You also need to establish a digital connection between the box and your home theater. You have three choices. Coax, fiber optic, or hdmi connections.

There is no preference among these three. Digital either works or it doesn’t. There are no quality differences between the three (yes I have proved it to myself). A coax will work just as well as a fiber optic cable, or a hdmi cable.

I should note that coax or fiber do not support high definition sound, but neither does cable. The only way to get hi-def sound is with a blu-ray player and an hdmi cable.

Q&A: How do I hook up my home theater system so I can listen to my digital cable? or regular tv stations?

Question by jmoss: How do I hook up my home theater system so I can listen to my digital cable? or regular tv stations?
i have a JVC THG31 5.1-channel 100 watt system want to be able to hear sound from broadcast tv to watch sports or computer because my computer is also hooked to my tv need help

Best answer:

Answer by Robert W
All you need to do is run an a/v cable from the audio out of the tv back to the Jvc audio input.

If both tv and receiver have a audio output/input that accepts digital, run a digital cable the same way.

Digital from audio output of tv to audio input of Jvc is the best way.

How do i enjoy 5.1 surround sound without having an optical cable on the back of the main unit?

Posted in More Info with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 3, 2010 by unlimitedtechsupport

Question by Ben W: How do i enjoy 5.1 surround sound without having an optical cable on the back of the main unit?
I have a ps3 and i want to connect it by optical cable to the back of the surround sound unit. My surround sound main unit doesn’t have an input for this but i was wondering if there was another way around it still achieving 5.1?

The connections on the rear of the surround sound unit include:

Audio in (aux)
Video out
Scart.

That is it.

So is there a way to get 5.1 through any of those using a converter?

Best answer:

Answer by Peter D
You have not just inputs to worry about, but PS3 outputs too. The PS3 can send audio in one of 3 ways.

1.) HDMI
2.) Optical
3.) RCA stereo

Since your receiver doesn’t allow for options 1 or 2 the only way you can send the audio is via RCA. So until you get a better receiver you’re stuck with 2 channel audio.
