Q&A: Should all the speakers on a home theater system emit sounds?

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , on August 24, 2010 by unlimitedtechsupport

Question by Synergy9: Should all the speakers on a home theater system emit sounds?
I have the Coby 5.1 Channel home theater speaker system. I hooked it up but I only hear sound from the front left and front right speakers. Should I be hearing sound from the center and surround left and right speakers as well?

Answer by iMaginethis1
all depends on what settings are on. there should be a button on the actual reciever and the remote to switch the different types of sound that could be played and what speakers are to be used. ALTHOUGH, the reason you may have all of the speakers activated and you only hear audio from the from front left, middle, and front right, is because the channel or movie that you are playing does not have 5.1 audio. meaning only the front will work and possibly the back but it will play the exact same audio as the front only a lot quieter. every movie is now made at least 5.1 so no worries with that. television channels do not ALL include 5.1, but some may!

hope that helped a little!

What is a good wattage I should look for in a home theater system?

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , on August 19, 2010 by unlimitedtechsupport

Question by jennnnn: What is a good wattage I should look for in a home theater system?
I want to buy my mom some speakers to hook up to her TV for Christmas because she can barely hear her tv right now, the volume on the tv itself is just very blah. We can have it turned clear up and still barely hear it.

So what should I look for in a home system then? Not something too expensive but I don’t want it to be cheap sound quality either. I’m not quite sure what amount of wattage I should look for and what not. Any recommendations?
I am also having a hard time finding a system that doesn’t come with a DVD player; my mom already has a DVD player I am just looking for some good speakers to amplify her TV sound so she can finally hear it.

just for normal home use i would recommend a home theatree/srround sound system with aout 300-400 watts capacity.

as an alternative (since it doesnot sound that you have like a big/hdtv/plasma TV) you can also buy those shelf systems, they come with 1 unit as a recievr with 2 speakers (and sometimes a woofer too)

just make sure that if you buy the shelf systems that the reciever has an Audio input (many systems usually come with that nowadays)

heres something from my own experience.
if the system that you buy does not come with all the cables you need goto this site to buy cables:
http://www.monoprice.com
i havent found cable for cheaper anywhere else and i am very happy with what i have gotten from them.
i got:
3 – 50 foot rolls of speaker cable
2 – 6 foot optical/TOSLINK cables
2 – 6 foor HDMI cables
7(sets) – banana plugs (i have a 7.1 system)
all of these cables came to me quickly and are high quality cables.
i don’t work for this company but am definitely a fan of their site.

go for a 2.0 system with a couple of really nice tower speakers.

2 of these http://www.electronicexpress.com/product?prod_id=8024&refer=6&cpc=6&utm_campaign=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle

get a 606 Onkyo receiver. And then start adding to your towers with other primus speakers as you get the funds.

For your sub woofer I suggest 2 SVS 12 subs.

Rome isn’t built in day and neither should a home theater system be.

HTIB aren’t really the way to go because they just don’t reproduce the full range of sound. Yes it’s nice to have some back speakers, but you are missing out on half the sound because those little speakers just don’t really have the punch the towers do.

You would do well to get a 19 or 27 inch flat screen. Today, Sharp and Vizeo are declared the best bang for the buck under 0. I would like to add Insignia, very good picture, reliable, but crummy sound. Purchase a Bose Wave Radio, sit the tv on top, plug in the radio and blue ray player. The other options do not have a flat top, like the Bose. They would be Polk Isonic, and the Cambridge Soundworks clock radio. Don’t be fooled by the term clock radio, all each one can hold his own in a bedroom. lol.
The most inexpensive sound option is the Cambridge Soundworks, it may be the best overall value of the bunch. Unique to the others Cambridge uses a built in down firing subwoofer. The unit needs to sit on something to keep it from vibrating on a hard surface, the sound is stellar.

Polk Isonic is just wonderful. I love it. I just might wind up being this little old man with a bunch of speakers and radios in the garage with a story about each one of them. I listened for an hour in the store, like I had no sense and a lot of nerve. Marvin Gaye, Boz Scaggs, Chopin, Hall and Oates all I could do was shake my head in agreement.

The Bose Wave radio with the CD slot is nearly 0, the one without the cd slot is only a radio 9, but it has all the connections in the back to connect into a flat screen. If you have a blue ray player, the cd slot would not be needed with the Bose. I like Bose, I have one of each version, the oldest one was given to me as a birthday gift in 1997. It works within a similar set up, just described as you read this. Not a single problem. Works like a charm. The other one is now, 5 years old under similar duty. Perfect track record and outstanding speakers for small flat screen tvs.

Question by misterjohnnyfever: What should I buy – cheap home theater system (under 200 bucks) or a DS Lite with a couple games?
I’m an avid gamer. I have a 360 but my TV doesn’t have great speakers. I don’t have any portable gaming systems and never played a single Game Boy Advance game (another plus to the DS Lite). Thanks for the suggestions!
