Question by nbct99: I am looking for a reasonable home theater system for my 13×22 room. How much do I have to spend?
I have a DVD player. Maybe a new receiver, a powered subwoofer and 5 speakers? What about watts? How will I know if I’m looking at a system that will not sound “full” enough to suit my large room? What are the minimum requirements for a decent sounding system for my 62″ TV? Can I do this for 0? I do not want a small sound. What will it take to make me happy but not spend myself into oblivion? I’m afraid I know little about what to look for.

Hsu Research has perhaps one of the best values for a home
theater speaker system for small to large rooms. Prices for a entry-level high performance system start at about 0 for 5-6
speakers and a powered subwoofer.
You want to find a good receiver like from Onkyo or Yamaha or
Pioneer for the price range you’re considering. Power should be
at least 60 watts per channel driven from at least 20Hz-20,000Hz.
Your speakers should have at least a sensitivity of 88dB @
1w/1m, and should be able to handle 100 watts RMS or more.
The higher the sensitivity, the lower the watts can be to achieve
the same loudness level.
Your powered subwoofer should be able to play bass down to at
least 30Hz flat (i.e. -3dB or less) and preferably 20Hz-25Hz or
better is ideal. Along with the low bass capabilities, the powered
sub needs to be able to play these frequencies at high levels. A
good sub will play a 30Hz tone at no less than 100dB with no
more than 10% distortion (i.e. maximum level before clipping).
The system I would specifically recommend for your room and
criteria would be the following…
Receiver – Onkyo TX-SR604
Speakers – Hsu Research HB-1 (x5) or VT-12
Powered Subwoofer – Hsu Research STF-2
As a couple of alternatives, SVS has a bunch of nice speaker
with powered subwoofer set-ups. Also, another great value,
go to Parts Express and look up Proficient and Dayton Audio.
They also carry a fine Pioneer surround sound receiver as well.
And one honerable mention goes out to the BIC Acoustech 5-
piece high-sensitivity home theater loudspeaker system with
a 12″ powered subwoofer. If you’re considering Klipsch for a
home theater system, Acoustech is a better choice for less $.
