Q&A: What is a good mid-range receiver-based home theater system?

Question by Slokes: What is a good mid-range receiver-based home theater system?
I have a moderate apartment and am looking for a low-mid range receiver-based (“cable ready”) home theater system. Any suggestions?

  1. The Eagle Keeper Says:

Ya Denon, Yamaha, & Onkyo all make respectable receivers in the $300-500 range that are more than adequate. http://www.crutchfield.com/g_10420/Receivers.html?tp=179

I have a Yamaha one myself & I have been very happy with it.

  2. Onkyo and Pioneer are the top two receivers in the low end budget, they also have other price range. Go online to Home theater magazine and read the reviews on receivers. I have personally used both brands and there higher ends Integra and Pioneer Elite for many years and have had no problems. The new models from both brands will be coming out this coming September or so. I was just at Fry’s Electronic an hour ago and you can save some money of the current models. Hope this will help you out.

I am guessing that vocals are most important to your ear and taste. And perhaps you will use your system for movies, plenty movies. And it needs to have a small or compact footprint because space is a premium, which limits where it can be located. However, where ever it is located it will be tied into the cable. I would think that speaker characteristics will surface as one of the more important features or qualities for your dollar. A fit would be a Bose system. Bose is a lifestyle oriented company who prides itself as a simple straight forward durable product that accents the decor of any room. Blending in with the room and providing spacious sound, the wonderment to the visitor is where? Where is that beautiful full sound coming from. Or they don’t notice where but it is just a part of the atmosphere, like music in a high end jewelry store.

If Bose is tempting then look at the link below and comparison shop. It has a list of 12 different brands that can meet your requirements. If you were to close your eyes and picked any of these brand systems, you will have made a good choice.

Lastly, listen to what you are considering purchasing. I could tell you to get Denon all day long, but if you spend your coin on Denon and cannot square with the sound of Denon it will be at the expense of your time and money. Most of us do not have much of either to make a bad decision. The only way to avoid a bad decision is to listen with your own ears, and read, read, read. Everyone that comes to visit you will tell you its nice, everyone that hears about it has their own qualified or unqualified opinion, so it is very important that you know what you like and then make the purchase. This would be my best advice to you.

    Grace.
